Indigenous Canadians take leading role in battle against tar sands pipeline

October 20, 2015 by danmesecfoto

Back in February 2015 I was asked to film a Wet’suwet’en potlatch in Moricetown. What I shot was part of a project that features First Nations’ battle against gas and oil pipeline development on their traditional territories. Here’s a short trailer featured in the UK’s Guardian newspaper. Click on the photo to watch the trailer.

The Klabona Keepers, a group of Tahltan elders and families protecting the area know as Tl’abãne, erected a blockade in August to halt operations at the Red Chris mine after toxic sludge was released from […]

September 16, 2014 by danmesecfoto

I love shooting images at night. Slow speeds, ambient lighting and long exposures make dreamy scenes. This is a collection of photos made at night in several locations in B.C. and Ontario and Slovenia.

Sacred Headwaters

September 8, 2014 by danmesecfoto

Last month I had the honour to set foot in one of the most pristine wildernesses on the planet. The Sacred Headwaters, where the Nass, Skeena and Stikine Rivers begin, is teaming with life far beyond that of the civilized world. Long before humans came to this land to drill gas wells and chip away at mountains in the hopes of acquiring riches from their minerals, great creatures such as Caribou, Elk, Eagles, Moose, Wolves, Salmon and Grizzly roamed the alpine […]

On the Scene at Blockade of Mount Polley’s Sister Mine Red Chris

August 20, 2014 by danmesecfoto

TATOGGA LAKE — The ongoing blockade of Red Chris mine near Iskut, B.C., was planned last Thursday at a twilight meeting of the Klabona Keepers — a group of Tahltan elders and families who live in the area, near the headwaters of the Stikine, Nass and Skeena rivers. By meeting’s end, a decision had been reached to try and halt operations at Red Chris by cutting off the operation’s supply corridors. The recent tailings pond breach at another Imperial Metals […]

The Silvern Lake Trail

August 3, 2014 by danmesecfoto

On the backside of Hudson Bay Mountain, you will see alpine meadows of the utmost beauty… Only if you know how to find them, however. The Silvern Lakes Trail is a perfect way to track a few down. At the end of Toboggan Creek Road, in the Wetzin’Kwa Community Forest, a difficult but worthwhile trail will await you. A one-way trip, about 8 km or so, is filled with lush, running creeks, dense forest growth and long meandering paths on […]

Journey to Whitehorse

July 10, 2014 by danmesecfoto

The Great White North is an area much larger than most of us actually realize. Here in the central interior of the B.C. most believe this is the far reaches of the north. But, those who have braved the road north know there is much more to see in the Great White North. Whitehorse is one of these places. Whitehorse, traditionally, was a jump off point for those headed into the klondike to find gold, wild beast and riches. Some […]
